Gastritis is a condition that occurs due to inflammation of the stomach lining. The condition can persist over a long period of time, called chronic gastritis, or for a short period of time, called acute gastritis. The chronic form of this condition is relatively rare, affecting two out of every 10,000 people. However, acute gastritis impacts far more individuals – roughly eight out of every 1,000 people.
What is Gastritis?
Gastritis is a medical term for an inflamed lining of the stomach, but can present in different forms. Gastropathy occurs when there is damage to the stomach lining, with little or no inflammation present. Some clinicians classify the condition as dyspepsia, which is also known as indigestion.
Is Gastritis Serious?
For most people, gastritis isn’t serious. However, chronic gastritis can lead to ulcers and increased risk of stomach cancer.
